# Dividing Decimals with Models

Aubrey’s mom is planning to make her famous orange limeade and asks Aubrey to go to the store. Aubrey ended up buying 3 oranges for a total of $2.67. How much does each orange cost?

**“What is division?”**

Division is when you take the total of something and split it up equally.

## #1 Make the model: 2 wholes / 6 tenths / 7 hundredths

**“Now what do we have to do with 2 wholes / 6 tenths / 7 hundredths?”**Split it up into 3 groups.

**“What do we start with?”**We need to start with the

*wholes.*

**“Can we split 2 wholes into three groups?”**No, there is not enough. We can take the wholes and break each of them apart!

1 whole = 10 tenths

## #2 Break up the wholes and exchange each of them for tenths.

## 1 whole = 10 tenths

There are a total of 26 tenths now

**“Now what do we do?”**Count up how many tenths we have and split them up into 3 groups. 26 tenths ÷ 3

We will find how tenths are in each of the 3 groups.

## #3 Divide the tenths

26 tenths ÷ 3 = 8 tenths in each group R2 tenths left over + 7 hundredths

**“What do we do with the 2 tenths and 7 hundredths?”**Do the same thing. Take the tenths and break each of them apart into hundredths.

1 tenths = 10 hundredths

## #4 Break up the tenths and exchange each of them for hundredths.

## 1 tenth = 10 hundredths

**“What’s next?”**Count up how many hundredths we have and split them up into 3 groups. 27 hundredths ÷ 3

We will find how hundredths are in each of the 3 groups.

## #5 Divide the hundredths

27 hundredths tenths left over ÷ 3 = 9 hundredths in each group

**“Put everything together! How much did each orange cost?”**

When we take 2 wholes, 6 tenths, 7 hundredths and split them equally into three groups = 8 tenths in each group & 9 hundredths in each group
